World Tourism Council: Over 300,000 jobs from tourism in Albania

The Albanian tourism turnaround, from a favorite sector mainly for locals and tourists only in the summer season, today the year-round destination preferred by foreign tourists from around the world, is expected to make a positive contribution ever-growing economy in the Albanian economy, with a chain effect on employment, consumption, hotel, business and leisure activities. 

World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) report in  prior  to 2019 the impact on the economy, expects the Albanian tourism will grow at positive rates.


Tourism and travel  contribution  to Albania’s gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to be 27.3% for 2019, up 5.2% from last year. 

“The growth mainly reflects the economic activity produced by industries such as hotels, travel agents, airlines and other passenger transport services. But it also includes, for example, restaurant activities and leisure industries directly supported by tourists, “- is quoted in the report.

According to WTTC, in 2018 tourism directly supported the opening of 286 thousand jobs. This is expected to reach over 300,000 jobs in 2019 and increase by 1.4% to 111,000 jobs (8.8% of total employment) in 2028.

In 2018, the total tourism contribution to employment, including indirectly supported jobs by industry, was 25.2% of total employment. 

Visitor exports are a key component of the direct contribution of tourist trips. In 2018, Albania had 264.8 million ALL revenues from visitor exports and in 2019, it is expected to grow to over 6 million international tourists.

The report cites that the share of travel and tourism in total national investment will increase from 7.6% in 2018 to 8.2% in 2028.
