The new work of the Albanian painter from Linz, Austria, Gazmend Freitag shows his “Look-Alike” with which he spent the weeks of lockdown due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Both are now presented to the public with a strong and moving coloring. And they answer four questions posed by the Austrian writer, Monika Grill.
Monika Grill: You have just finished your new self-portrait. Like all people, you have had to follow the lockdown regulations. How was it for you, alone in the studio, without the opportunity to see your friends?
Gazmend Freitag: This is not new to me. I always paint and do it alone. But I certainly feel a little lonely because I like to meet friends for a glass of red wine in the evening.
Monika Grill: I remember your self-portrait from 2014. What has changed for you since then?
Gazmend Freitag: My style has become more realistic, more figurative and also more dramatic. The colors are stronger. I am bolder. To be honest, I like the new painting much more. And I feel exactly the way I look at it.
Monika Grill: Do you feel older?
Gazmend Freitag: No, not at all. But my appearance is now much more oriented towards the future. I have processed the past in a painted way. Now I am curious about what will come.
Monica Grill: Now my question about your “Look-alike”. Have you kept your distance and not infected each other?
Gazmend Freitag: We have behaved in an exemplary manner. And we only got infected with enthusiasm and a lot of colors.
